UMBY students in Gunung Kidul are transforming livestock waste into organic fertilizer through a community service project. In Padukuhan Ngelak, they work with locals to reduce pollution and enhance agriculture. This initiative fosters rural development and environmental sustainability, benefiting the community directly.

Krajan.id – In a remarkable collaboration, students from the Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) Group 25 of Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta (UMBY) joined forces with residents of Ngelak Hamlet in Pacarejo Village, Semanu District, Gunung Kidul Regency, DIY Yogyakarta, to transform livestock waste into beneficial organic fertilizer on Friday, August 2, 2024.

Facing the dual challenges of livestock waste management and the need to boost agricultural productivity, the KKN-PPM Group 25 students spearheaded an organic fertilizer production initiative at the home of Karno, a local resident.

This initiative is part of a broader community service program aimed at addressing environmental issues such as air, water, and soil pollution caused by livestock waste, which can also be a source of disease.

Rizan Syahba Budiman, the leader of KKN Group 25, emphasized the tangible impact of student involvement in rural development.

“By organizing organic fertilizer production in Ngelak Hamlet, the KKN-PPM 25 UMBY students are actively contributing to the community. This is a form of our dedication to society,” he stated.

The organic fertilizer produced is derived from decomposed plant residues and animal manure. This process not only helps in waste reduction but also results in high-quality fertilizer that is highly beneficial for agriculture.

Jeremy Christian Tarigan, a participating KKN student, highlighted the fertilizer’s ideal pH level of 7, making it perfect for vegetable cultivation. “This organic fertilizer is excellent for enriching the soil, improving its health, and reducing the need for chemical products,” explained Jeremy, an Animal Husbandry major at UMBY.

This program offers new knowledge and practical skills that can be applied by the community, particularly livestock owners in Ngelak Hamlet.

Local cattle farmers expressed their gratitude for the initiative, noting the eco-friendly solution it provides for managing their livestock waste.

The KKN-PPM UMBY students hope that through this initiative, the economic welfare of the village community will improve.

The activity was well-received by local residents, who actively participated in every step of the organic fertilizer production process.
