The University of Indonesia (UI) began its socialization for the 2024-2029 rector election, focusing on integrating diverse aspirations from faculty and students. Key topics include gender equality, cybersecurity, and external collaborations. Prof. Sigit emphasized the need for a visionary rector to address these multifaceted challenges.
goodnewsfromstudent.com – The University of Indonesia (UI) has commenced its socialization process for the 2024-2029 rector election, spearheaded by the Committee for Screening and Selection of Rector Candidates (P3CR). From July 12 to July 25, 2024, the committee visited all faculties within the UI Depok campus to encourage internal participation and gather aspirations from faculty members, administrative staff, and students regarding the future leader of UI.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Sigit Pranowo Hadiwardoyo, DEA, Chair of the P3CR UI, emphasized the importance of this socialization process not only in selecting rector candidates from the faculties but also in collecting the diverse aspirations from across the university.
“The selected rector must be capable of integrating their vision with the beneficial ideas from other candidates to positively impact UI,” stated Prof. Sigit.
The socialization activities organized by P3CR included three main agendas: registration socialization, administrative socialization, and Q&A sessions. Key expectations were voiced by several deans, including Teguh Dartanto, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business; Prof. Dr. Drs. Semiarto Aji Purwanto, M.Si., Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences; Prof. Dr. Ir. Petrus Mursanto, M.Sc., Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science; Prof. Dede Djuhana, M.Si., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences; and Prof. Dr. apt. Arry Yanuar, M.Si., Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Teguh Dartanto expressed a desire for the new rector to enhance higher education quality while improving UI’s ranking through high-quality human resources. Prof. Aji echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of gender representation by encouraging female candidates to step forward, aligning with UI’s values of inclusivity and openness.
“This aspiration aligns with the principle of openness, one of UI’s nine core values,” Prof. Aji stated.
On a different note, Prof. Dede Djuhana and Prof. Arry Yanuar focused on the rector’s ability to foster external collaborations, particularly with industries in science and technology. Such partnerships can lead to research collaborations and innovative developments, supported by adequate facilities such as modern classrooms and advanced laboratories.

Prof. Petrus Mursanto, however, highlighted cybersecurity, research, and innovation as critical areas for the future rector. He stressed the importance of addressing recent data security breaches and incorporating IT as a fundamental component of the university’s main system.
“Information and Technology (IT) should not merely be a support system but a central part of our operations. The data breaches experienced by the National Data Center must prompt us to prioritize cybersecurity within the university,” he remarked.
As the election approaches, the diverse expectations from various faculties underline the multifaceted challenges and opportunities the new rector will face. The integration of gender equality, educational quality, external partnerships, and cybersecurity will be pivotal in driving UI forward in the coming years.
